The article discusses the manners of coexistence of jews with their Christian neighbors in seventeenth-century wilno, the capital of the Grand duchy of lithuania. wilno was at that time a multiethnic and multiconfessional city. that coexistence was represented on several levels: in the sphere of the entire city, in the jewish “quarter,” in individual houses, in which jews and Christians lived together, as well as in families, when it came to the marriages of persons of jewish extraction with Christians. the article treats the question of the legal status of jews and the differentiated relationship to them of different Christian estates (the nobles, the burghers, and the clergy). the rich set of examples is based mainly on legal documents of the seventeenth century. there arises from them an interesting picture, not susceptible to one interpretation and fa
